For
the last 30 years, the Portobello hotel has been a breath of fresh air
and originality in a world of bland and functional hotels.
The original
boutique hotel, it kick started the trend for small, offbeat
places to stay with the emphasis on comfort and cutting edge design.
At the Portobello
hotel, situated in London’s trendy Notting hill district, the staff are
friendly, warm and discreet - an important factor in
this celebrity haven.
The hotel was first opened in 1971 by a
trio who thought it would be a
good idea to play up the hotel’s quirks and eccentricities. The rooms
all have a unique style to them - but all are warm, cosy and sexy.
|
The
phrase English eccentrics conjures up many images but this hotel seems to
be a typical example - with a mish-mash of styles that have attracted the
most rock and roll of guests….
With
its large, Victorian bathing machine - a collection of
copper pipes, taps and massive sprinkler, all surgically attached to
a turn-of-the century claw-footed bath - surrounded by an island of
black and white tiles
directly behind a massive round bed, you begin
to understand why certain room have become so popular.
|
One of the most
charming rooms, is room 6 - with a view of the gardens being its main
feature.
Unlike
most establishments that cater to the famous and glamorous clientele, the
Portobello recognises that elite does not necessarily mean rich - offering
rooms that are suitable for the more budget conscious - yet never
compromising on style.
