Furniture designer Richard Baker is passionate about style. He believes, that beautiful furniture speaks volumes about the person who owns it. And if it’s a beautiful sofa you want, then the best place to find one is in Richard’s shop ‘Chairmaker’ in Brighton, on the south coast of England.

Richard’s designs reflect the feel of the town - sophisticated and daring.

The furniture may be super cool, but the atmosphere in the shop itself is easy-going and friendly.

Chairmaker is a family business.  It’s a legacy from his father who ran the firm for 30 years. Richard now works alongside his brother Kevin in production……and his wife Libby in the shop.

Men seem to go for different styles of furniture from women.

Thunderbird has all the panache of a classic car, and together

with Baby Bird, the foot stool, is a popular choice for men.

Bomber, Rumble and Fat Cat are all a must for the masculine home. A firm favourite among women is Snake Eyes - here in purple crushed velvet. And you’d hardly be surprised to know that the girls also love this leopard skin print chaise lounge.

But there’s always the classic ‘something’ to suit all tastes - like Sofa Number One

If it’s something to curl up in then the Winged Monster is the one for you.

… a chair and a half…Or a sofa and a half of quintessentially English design, then look no further - Chairmaker has the one for you.

Englishness is certainly the underlying theme here - traditional and modern.

If you don’t see quite what you want in the showroom, then you could ask Richard to create a unique piece for your home.

The inspirational designs may have been snapped up by pop stars, and even royalty, but Richard’s ambition is to make furniture that we can all enjoy in our homes.
